Winner of the Special Jury Award for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festiva,l Schultze Gets the Blues is a bittersweet comedy about one man's musical journey from a small German village to the bayous of Louisiana.
Middle-aged Schultze has been laid off from his mining job in a small former East German town. Spending far too much time in the beer hall with his buddies, going fishing and relaxing in the local folk music club, where he belts out a mean polka on his accordion, Schultze's life takes a turn when he hears a jaunty zydeco tune on the radio. Throwing caution to the wind he slams down the bratwurst and takes up cooking jambalaya, and shocks his friends by adopting a new accordion routine'creole style. Things really heat up when he begins savings his euros for a trip to the American Deep South.
