Somnambulance (Somnambuul) Estonia

Eetala is a young woman who lives with her ageing father in an isolated cottage beside the Baltic Sea. They exist in a dreamlike, watery world of islands, reeds and damaged boats, while beyond their stark horizon WWII enters its final stage. Seemingly desperate to flee the bleak environs, Eetala is encouraged by her father to travel. She musters the will to leave but soon returns, evidently drawn to the safety of that which she knows. Occasional outsiders pass by, including a young doctor, Kasper. Will he be the one to draw Eetala out of her fear and anxiety towards the unpredictability of tomorrow'Nominated for a Tiger award at Rotterdam this year.

'somnambulance is a film that lies, as director Keedus would wish 'between being awake and asleep'. If it is a film that is understandable within the tradition of a Sokurov or Tarkovsky, it also marks out Keedus as a distinctive new voice in that universe of the intense and the strange.' -Rotterdam International Film Festival
