Housewarming
"Remodelling: you know when it starts but not when it will be over." Housewarming is Brigitte Rouan's comedic musing on renovations, relationships, domestic mayhem and illegal immigrants. Chantal Letellier (Carole Bouquet) is a legal sleuth, battling for the disadvantaged and invariably dominating in the courtroom. She's also a single mother, raising two teenage kids and juggling the friendship of her ex-husband and her own single status. When she needs to connect her upstairs apartment with the downstairs, partly a ploy to put off an eager admirer, she calls in a client, an illegal Colombian immigrant, who just happens to be an architect. Joined by a crew of his madcap compatriots, together these multi-skilled moonlighters introduce pure chaos to Chantal's home. Rouan expertly directs a wonderful cast through the unruly convolutions of this hilarious, fast-paced and ultimately pointed drama. The delightful Housewarming screened in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes, 2005.
