public toilet

Director Fruit Chan / 2002 / Hong kong

This is a most uncommon film about who we are, what we dream and what we all do at least a couple of times a day. Fruit Chan's seventh film is a wandering, contrary, metaphorical journey that focuses on four public toilets in four countries to explore the four basic human emotions: excitement, anger, sadness and happiness. Characters in locales from China to New York wander the globe searching for miracle cures for their terminally ill beloveds. Despite their unifying goals, each individual faces different obstacles and trials. In Chan's satiric, darkly funny and subtly poetic universe, people visit public toilets to live and die, and maybe even find a beautiful Korean sea creature that feeds on human waste!

Public Toilet features an international cast, including Jang Hyuck (Volcano High).

"For all his unflinching obsession with death and angst, there are at least as many moments of human compassion and romantic beauty scattered throughout Chan's work... There's a modesty to Public Toilet that makes me hope it's the future of global filmmaking." - Senses of Cinema
