HollywooD Hong Kong

Director Fruit Chan / 2001

In the shadow of the modern, sky-rise, residential towers Plaza Hollywood (in East Kowloon) is the shantytown Tai Hom, which will shortly be torn down by the government to make way for a new development. Into this town enters mainland prostitute Tung Tung, also going by the name Fong Fong. She proceeds to disrupt the lives of Tai Hom's decidedly odd inhabitants, but not before ingratiating herself into their lives with her seemingly carefree playfulness and beguilingly innocent sexuality. She first enchants Keung, a small-time pimp and porn addict who discovers her on the Internet. At the same time she befriends Tiny, the massively overweight younger son of pork hawker Chu. Chu finds himself enchanted by the young temptress too, but it is his older son, Ming, who falls under her sexual spell. With a combination of black humour, absurdity and simple humanity, Hollywood, Hong Kong stands alone as a portrait of Hong Kong's underbelly.
