ELECTION 2
Hak se wui yi wo wai kwai
In a much welcome return to the festival big screen, MIFF regular Johnnie To picks up perfectly where last year's Closing Night feature ended with the electric Election 2.
Offering an ingenuously appropriate end to the storylines of the first film, Election 2 opens with Hong Kong's oldest triad, Wo Sing, which is the most feared crime organisation under its current Chairman.
Jimmy, an educated gangster, wants to go clean but his profit-making enterprises have made him a favourite in the upcoming Chairman election. The Chinese authorities offer him access to Mainland's business market should he choose to lead Wo Sing. So to escape, first he must lead them. As he unwillingly embarks on a violent campaign trail, Jimmy discovers his future, as well as that of Wo Sing, hang in the balance of a far greater power.
In To's latest feature, the old orthodoxies of Hong Kong go to war with the new regime.
“To fans are going to be delighted, and it's a good start for viewers unfamiliar with his work.” - Hollywood Reporter
