SONHOS DE PEIXE

Director Kirill Mikhanovsky / 2006 / USA/Brazil/Russia

Sonhos de Peixe screened as part of International Critic's Week at Cannes Film Festival and won the Prix Regards Jeune.
A village romance clashes with big city dreams in this engaging love story from Russian-born filmmaker Kirill Mikhanovsky.
Jusce enjoys a simple life in a small fishing village in Brazil, making a living diving for lobsters and spending his spare time with Ana, with whom he is infatuated. While Jusce is content with life in the village, Ana dreams of travelling to see the world, dreams that are fuelled by a TV soap opera that is a favourite among the villagers. When Rogério, an old friend of Jusce, returns from the big city to get work offering dune buggy rides along the coast, Jusce quickly realises that he now has a rival for Ana's attentions and he begins a campaign to win her heart.
Bringing the rustic setting to life, Andrij Parekh's deft cinematography makes the most of the sun-drenched Brazilian scenery and gives a dreamlike quality to the film's underwater scenes.

Dario Bergesio (producer) is a guest of the festival and will introduce the session on Saturday 29 July, 3pm at RMIT Capitol Theatre.
