OPAL DREAM
Australian Premiere
Recently opening Berlin Film Festival's Kinderfest, Opal Dream plays to the inner child in all of us; an innocent look at an extraordinary event in the ordinary mining town of Coober Pedy.
Possessing an over-active imagination, young Kellyanne has conjured a couple of make-believe friends called Pobby and Dingan. Her insistence on their existence is enough to drive her parents and older brother around the bend but no one can pre-empt the effect on their family and, in fact, the whole town when Kellyanne's non-existent buddies mysteriously go missing.
Through misconstrued acts and mishaps, Opal Dream revisits the familiar ‘interloper' conundrum, whereby unorthodoxy is seen as a threat. At the same time, it asks its audience to suspend any world-weary cynicism and accept that what could be dismissed as mere fantasy has very real ramifications. The film stars Jacqueline McKenzie and Vince Colosimo, as Kellyanne's parents, and is based on the acclaimed novella by Ben Rice, Pobby and Dingan.
Actor Vince Colossimo will introduce the session on Saturday 5 August, 7pm at RMIT Capitol Theatre.
