When a marine said, “We're more likely to get shot at in Miami than in Baghdad” in George Gittoes' powerful Soundtrack to War, he planted the seeds for this next project, Rampage.

A stark and, at times, painful portrait of three brothers, this documentary reveals a dark ghetto within America's sunny state, but also a fertile breeding ground for Afro-American creativity and culture. Upon the death of one brother, Gittoes personally advocates the musical career of the youngest, Marcus, whose head-butting with the music industry only adds to the heartbreak.

Gittoes admits these brothers “have nothing and yet the whole time I was with them, I felt that I was poorer than they were. I felt that they were in a culture which was much, much richer than mine.” The film features an original soundtrack that includes spontaneous raps from the Brown Sub area in Miami, as well as Swiss Beatz, Fat Joe and DJ Kaled.

Screened at this year's Berlin Film Festival.

Director George Gittoes and Producer Gabrielle Dalton will introduce the session on Saturday 5 August, 1pm at ACMI.
