LA PERRERA

The Dog pound

Director Manuel Nieto Zas / 2006 / Uruguay/Argentina/Canada/Spain

La Perrera was winner of a Tiger Award at this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival.
David is a slacker: a lazy, sex-obsessed pothead. His father, Ruben, despairing of David's apathetic attitude to life, decides to instil a work ethic by giving him a construction project to occupy his time over the summer break.
David finds himself commissioned to build a house near the family holiday home in a sleepy seaside Uruguayan town, but his fondness for sleep, drugs and masturbation tend to relegate any construction activities to the bottom of his ‘to do' list. After further browbeating from his enraged father - who isn't happy to see that almost no work has taken place - David enlists the help of his similarly drug-addled friend, Rodney, and the house slowly begins to take shape.
With naturalistic performances rounding out its tragi-comic vignettes, La Perrera is a meandering reflection on aimlessness as experienced by the youth of a country buffeted by external and internal forces.
