LOFT
Shi no otome
A writer in a secluded country house is haunted by the past in the latest supernatural horror offering from Kurosawa Kiyoshi.
Reiko (Nakatani Miki, Ring), an author struggling with a deadline on her romance novel, suddenly starts to exhibit strange symptoms. She coughs up what appears to be mud, though her doctor claims there is nothing wrong with her.
When she takes up residence in a remote country house to finish the book, she finds that the building behind her cottage is being used to store a mummified body found in the local swamp by an archaeology professor, Yoshioka. Reiko quickly becomes convinced that she is not alone in her dwelling; glimpses of a ghostly dead girl seem to point to a dark legacy infesting the cottage and its surrounds.
Kurosawa uses a mastery of composition and mise en scène to craft an exquisite sense of creeping dread. Taking the well-established traditions of J-horror and adding a few unique twists of its own, Loft is spine-tingling viewing.
