GUERNSEY
Writer-director Nanouk Leopold's impressive second feature delves into notions of how we create distances and fall out of phase with one another.
A strong-willed, thirty-something, wife and mother, Anna is an irrigation engineer on aid missions, seemingly leading a comfortable existence. When a colleague commits suicide while they're both working abroad, Anna keeps the incident secret, which festers into a skewed view of her closest relationships with those around her. Eschewing heightened drama, the film quietly unfolds as she questions what she means to her family and, in fact, if they really know her at all. As Anna emotionally distances, she effectively becomes a voyeur to her own domestic dramas.
Highly contemplative, subtle and emotionally wrenching, Guernsey is a ravishingly visual work that screened to considerable acclaim during Director's Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.
