BLISS

Director Sheng Zhimin / 2006 / China

What passes away is, perhaps, like the river. Day and night, it never lets up. On the banks of the Yangtze River in the misty city of Chongqing, a father and son live in the shadow of one woman - their wife and mother who abandoned them years ago and who remains ever present in the failings of their new relationships. When she returns in an unexpected manner, the burden remains but also, hopefully, there comes release. The Yangtze River mixes as a character itself in this film, constantly flowing and meandering, with vivid locations correlating with the unpredictable twists that befall the father and son. With Bliss, filmmaker Sheng Zhimin, a protégé of Fruit Chan, emerges as an impressive new talent in Chinese cinema. Nominee and award-winner at last year's Locarno Film Festival.
