U

Director Gregoire Solotareff, Serge Elissalde / 2006 / FRANCE

“Animated beasties, both cool and cranky.” - Variety This colourful bedtime story introduces us to Princess Mona, an orphan who lives in a castle with two ghastly characters. One day, her sobs draw a unicorn named U who claims she's there to comfort and protect Mona. Life becomes sweeter with U around and Mona grows into a beautiful young woman who also finds herself increasingly attracted to a dreamy musician, Kulka. For U, this situation raises a worrying dilemma: What will happen to her if Mona discovers happiness, which is the sole reason for U's existence? At Toronto Film Festival, U was described as “a rare film indeed that acknowledges the depth and intensity of children”. Also screened at Berlin Film Festival. MIFF recommends: Age 6 - 10. No sensitive content.
