BEAUTY IN TROUBLE

Director Jan Hrebejk / 2006 / Czech Republic

“Beauty in trouble flees to the good angel/On whom she can rely...” - poet Robert Graves Striking, young mother Marcela lost everything in the floods that swamped Prague in 2002. Her flat is small and empty, and shared with her two children and her husband, Jarda - a good but disagreeable man forced into a life of crime to make ends meet. Their only communication takes the form of frequent sexual encounters, which leave their kids blocking their ears. When Jarda is thrown in jail, Marcela begins a slow and dignified relationship with a rich, older man. She yearns for stability but fate has other plans for her. Beauty in Trouble is the latest offering from Jan Hrebejk, the Czech director of multiple award-winners Up and Down and Divided We Fall.
