STILL LIFE

Director Zhang Ke Jia / 2006 / Hong Kong/China

“I entered this condemned city Fengjie with my camera and I witnessed demolitions and explosions. In the roaring noise and fluttering dust, I gradually felt that life really could blossom in brilliant colours even in a place with such desperation.” - filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke Fengjie's old town is already under water but its new neighbourhood hasn't been finished yet. There are things to salvage and there are things to leave behind for Han, a miner returning to look for his ex-wife, and Shen, a nurse searching for her husband. Set against the real-world displacement of China's riverbank communities, Still Life was shot in the 2000 year-old city of Fengjie, which has been torn down and submerged by the Three Gorges Dam project. Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
