NOBODY KNOWS

Director Hirokazu Kore-eda / 2004 / Japan

“Calling this an ‘issue' film ignores the fact that movies concerned with the fragile reality of childhood are as precious as one-pound pearls.” - Village Voice Based on a true story, Nobody Knows sees four children relying on their wits and premature wisdom while fending for themselves in a bustling metropolis. Begging, borrowing and stealing are part of their daily grind, with neither parents assuming the responsibility of their care and shelter. But no matter how dour their situation becomes, their resilience and joy never disappears. Kore-eda used prompted improvisation to coax performances from his young leads, as well as shooting chronologically over a year to enable them to grow. Praised at the Cannes Film Festival where 14 year-old Yagira Yuga was awarded the Best Actor award.
