LOST IN BEIJING

Director Yu Li / 2006 / China

Sex, greed and a little bit of love make the world go round in Lost in Beijing, Li Yu's tragi-comic view of life in the new China. Foot masseuse Liu Pingguo and husband, An Kun, a high-rise window cleaner, are struggling to get by, barely able to pay their rent. When Pinggauo gets drunk with her boss after work one day, he forces himself on her, an unfortunate scene that her husband Kun just happens to witness through a window. Following the inevitable fallout, Pinggauo discovers she is pregnant. Her boss, delighted, agrees to pay the couple to buy the baby once it is born - that is, if it turns out to be his. Kun quickly agrees, his greed pulling the couple into a devil's bargain with his former adversary. Li Yu's Dam Street featured in MIFF 06.
