VHS-KAHLOUCHA

Director Nejib Belkadhi / 2006 / Tunisia

Meet Moncef Kahloucha, Tunisia's very own Quentin Tarantino. Tunisia is not a country renowned for its film industry. Apparently, no one told this to Moncef Kahloucha. A charismatic, impassioned house painter, he always harboured a great love for cinema, especially 70s genre films. Armed with his VHS Panasonic 3500, Kahloucha's battery of homage pieces include I Had No Money and Now I'm Loaded and Misery to Get Rid of the Booze. In Néjib Belkadhi's entertaining documentary, we meet the renegade filmmaker deep in production on his latest feature, Tarzan of the Arabs. Kahloucha's directorial style is equal parts madness and magic as he recruits locals to star in explosive chase scenes and bloody plotlines. For anyone who has ever dreamed of making a movie, Kahloucha's story is an inspiring one.
