MONKEY GRIP

Director Ken Cameron / 1982 / Australia

An indisputable Australian classic, based on the novel by Helen Garner and featuring music performed by the Divinyls. Starring Colin Friels and Noni Hazelhurst in her AFI award-winning role, Monkey Grip wades through the sex, drugs and rock ‘n' roll scene of Melbourne in the late 70s. It's a gritty and powerful study of a single mother who goes against her better judgement to pursue a dangerous love affair with a man addicted to heroin. As their obsessive relationship spirals out of control, it threatens to consume not only the couple but those around them. As controversial today as it was on its first release. “Soap operas come in all shapes and sizes but they rarely have either the solemnity or the setting of Monkey Grip.'' - New York Times Print courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive's Atlab/Kodak Project.
