RED LIKE THE SKY

ROSSO COME IL CIELO

Director Cristiano Bortone / 2006 / Italy

“You'll grow up, and by that time you'll have outgrown everything about this place.”

Inspired by the true story of Mirco Mencacci, one of Italy's most gifted sound editors, Red Like the Sky follows young Mirco, who loses his eyesight after a rifle accident at his family's home in Pisa. Sent to Italy's top school for the blind, 10-year-old Mirco endures the instant dislike of the school's stern director and the unbearable cruelty of the resident bully, finding solace in only a few friends and the magic of an old tape recorder. Like Toto's discovery of film in Cinema Paradiso, Mirco's exploration of sound opens up a new world of discovery, possibility and eventually escape. Multiple award winner, including Best Film at the Montreal International Children's Film Festival.

MIFF recommends: Age 10+. One mild frightening scene, mild course language.
