WILD COMBINATION - A PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR RUSSELL

Director Matt Wolf / 2008 / USA

“Before I even heard Arthur's music, I was intrigued. My friend described a long forgotten gay disco auteur in a farmer's plaid shirt, obsessively listening to mixes of his own music on the Staten Island Ferry.” - filmmaker Matt Wolf

This exploration of avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter and music producer Arthur Russell reveals an artist literally lost in music - his work spanned pop, disco, classical and abstract experimentalism, before he died tragically from AIDS in 1992 at the age of 40.

From pastoral Iowa, to a San Francisco Buddhist commune, to the New York underground disco scene, Wild Combination uses archival footage and commentary from Russell's family, friends and past collaborators (including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg) to sketch an arresting portrait of an unconventional talent.

Screens with the short Nick Cave Abusing the Muse.
