CRAZIES, THE (M)

Director George Romero / 1973 / USA

All hell is about to break loose.

A plane crash in Evans City leads to a poisonous spill in the local water supply. Side effects of the top secret deadly bacteria on the local population include spasms, bursts of aggression and death: a lovely old lady stabs a rescuer with a knitting needle, a priest sets himself on fire, and children find their mother in a bloodbath...

To contain the plague and keep things under wraps Washington sends in a sinister, brutal force in white decontamination suits and black masks. Caught between two horrors, the infected town fights back.

Originally titled Code Name: Trixie, Romero's apocalyptic vision of biological war and community disintegration is a stinging allegory of the Nixon years, yet rings almost truer today.
