IN BRUGES

Director Martin McDonagh / 2008 / UK, Belgium

“Just when you think you've seen every possible variation on the hit-man genre, Irish playwright Martin McDonagh… has fashioned an audacious combination of Old World grace and modern ultraviolence.” - Hollywood Reporter

Bruges, Belgium is the kind of medieval city that exists in storybooks: Gothic architecture, canals, cobbled streets and simple locals. It's not the kind of place where two laddish hit-men, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), want to cool their heels. But after botching a job in London, their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) orders them to assume the lives of tourists. As Ken begins to wax philosophical and Ray finds himself in some profanely comic turns, McDonagh deftly toys with the gangster convention, offering up a pair of mobsters that are every bit as buffoonish as they are brutal.
