ORDER OF MYTHS, THE

Director Margaret Brown / 2008 / USA

“In this vision of the South, separate but equal is not only alive and well, it is the dominant mode of interaction.” - Hollywood Reporter

Founded in 1703, the Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama is America's oldest, and it's still going strong. With the celebrations come traditions rooted firmly in a bygone era, as it continues to divide sensibilities by remaining racially segregated. The Order of Myths focuses on the lead up to the 2007 Mardi Gras and on a community proudly showcasing its outdated heritage. Margaret Brown (Be Here to Love Me, MIFF 05) follows the Mardi Gras preparations on both sides, conducting includes interviews with the African-American participants and with the bourgeois members of Alabama's whites-only mystic societies, speaking with pride from behind their Mardi Gras masks - which are disturbingly reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan.
