CHOCOLATE

Director Prachya Pinkaew / 2008 / Thailand

A special needs girl with a special need to kick some ass.

With its tongue firmly planted in its cheek, Chocolate unleashes a new type of heroine - a martial-arts master with lightning-quick reflexes energised by eating copious amounts of chocolate.

Zen, a girl with autism and attitude, takes on the role of debt collector for her ailing mother, revealing a kung fu repertoire - learnt from numerous viewings of filmmaker Prachya Pinkaew's previous film Ong Bak (MIFF 04) - that would make Bruce Lee jealous.

Featuring a series of highly stylised, no strings, no stunt-doubles fight scenes, Chocolate joins the Pinkaew canon alongside the martial-arts classics Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong.
