Director Agnès Varda / 2008 / France

“If you opened people up, you would find landscapes. If you opened me up you would find beaches.” - Agnès Varda

French auteur Agnès Varda (The Gleaners & I, MIFF 2001; Cléo de 5 à 7) takes an unconventional approach to film-as-memoir with this charming exploration of her own memories and art.

Returning to places that dominate her life's memories - including the beaches of the title - Varda explores and recreates reminiscences from her past, crafting a kind of living memoir. Guiding us through her films, photography and art installations, Varda touches on her outspoken social commentary, her feminism, realism and the undeniable experimental style that makes her unique.

Warmly recalling old collaborations and friendships, Varda reminisces about her time with the likes of Harrison Ford, Jim Morrison, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut and her beloved late husband, filmmaker Jacque Demy.

“A lyrical, restlessly inventive memory film.” - Village Voice
