EROS PLUS MASSACRE

Erosu purasu Gyakusatsu

Director Yoshishige Yoshida / 1969 / Japan

“A climactic, delirious, wall-busting murder fantasy.” - Village Voice

Yoshishige Yoshida's exigent Eros Plus Massacre centres on anarchist Sakae Osugi, who was killed in the devastating wake of the great Kanto earthquake of 1923. His dramatic story comes framed in the musings of a group of college students during the 70s economic boom, envisaging what the events leading to his death might have been like as a counterpoint to their existential impasse.

This dense and self-reflexive film experiments with the obscure intersection between fiction and reality, history and memory, and anxiety and revolution in the wake of the collapsed Left movement. It is an intricately framed piece, artfully designed and completely unique in its narrative and aesthetic, making it a truly audacious journey to uncharted cinematic horizons.
