PIERROT LE FOU

Director Jean-Luc Godard / 1965 / France

“I saw Pierrot le fou by chance… I decided to make movies the same night.” - filmmaker Chantal Akerman.

Marking a transition between Jean-Luc Godard's earlier works and his later more politically engaged films, Pierrot le fou recalls the gangster cool of Breathless while foreshadowing the apocalyptic visions of Week End.

After abandoning his wife at a party, Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) flees his bourgeois existence with babysitter/ex-lover, Marianne (Anna Karina). Going on the lam to the south of France, the couple turn into an existential Bonnie and Clyde, battling gunrunners, gas station attendants and American tourists as they come face-to-face with their own roles as characters in a pop-cultural landscape.

MIFF has obtained a brand-new digitally restored print in breathtaking CinemaScope for this screening of Godard's classic.

“Whimsical and melancholic, playful and heavy as a heart swollen with emotion.” - New York Times
