DEFAMATION

Director Yoav Shamir / 2009 / Israel, Austria, USA, Denmark

“Explores intelligently the very touchy topic of anti-Semitism.” - Hollywood Reporter

Having elicited charges of anti-Semitism from critics of his previous films, Yoav Shamir (Flipping Out, MIFF 08; 5 Days, MIFF 06) undertakes a personal study of the subject, travelling to Auschwitz, Moscow, Brooklyn and Rome to examine Jewish responses to anti-Semitism.

With deft humour and a light touch, Shamir investigates the complicated issues surrounding the subject, exploring the murky relationship between anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel's government, and asking whether Holocaust remembrance has become an unhealthy obsession.

“Though it rarely addresses the Israeli/Palestinian conflict directly, Defamation asks a question that strikes at the heart of the matter: At what point does past suffering become a pretext or excuse for inflicting pain upon others?” - National
