MILK OF SORROW, THE
“Peruvian realities and… light magical realism mesh to create a vivid picture of a society and its problems.” - Variety
Fausta suffers from what Peruvians call la teta asustada - ‘the frightened breast' - a condition passed through mother's milk that affects the children of those born to women raped during Peru's years of terrorism. She's paralysed by fear, and it's not until her mother dies that the extent of her distress becomes all too clear.
Peruvian myth and folk beliefs entwine with reality, in a place where the past is not spoken of, but is still a palpable presence - both for those who lived through it, and those who didn't.
