MAID, THE

la nana

Director Sebastián Silva / 2008 / Chile

Filmmaker Sebastián Silva injects a simultaneously menacing and humourous undertone to this tale of a long-serving - and borderline psychotic - maid.

Raquel has worked in service to the Valdes family for 23 years; to help ease her workload they hire extra help - although this only needles Raquel's paranoia and fenced-in fragility.

At once an engrossing character study of a woman deluded by servitude into thinking that she's ‘one of the family', and a clever commentary on class in Latin American society.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Special Jury Prize for acting (Catalina Saavedra) at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

“Sustains an impressive degree of claustrophobic momentum in scenes churning with passive-aggressive comedy, impeccably observed detail and emotional violence.” - Seattle Film Festival
