NYMPH

Director Pen-ek Ratanaruang / 2009 / Thailand

“Oozes a sylvan sensuality.” - Bangkok Post

Former MIFF guest and Thai revelation Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Invisible Waves, MIFF 06; Ploy, MIFF 08) returns with a moody supernatural drama about a how a couple is changed by encounter with a strange jungle spirit.

When Nop, a photographer, accepts an assignment filming wildlife in the wilds of the Thai jungle, he decides to take his estranged wife along for the ride. Nop vanishes suddenly, and his wife is frantic with worry - when he returns just as mysteriously, something has changed him.

The jungle of Ratanaruang's Nymph is a not a place of natural wonder, but rather an eerie and foreboding realm of shadows and undergrowth; a metaphor, perhaps, for the tangled depths of the modern relationship - something the distinctive Thai director attempts to unravel here.
