A young doctor contracts syphilis while operating on a soldier during the war.

On returning to Tokyo, he enters private practice in the family clinic, but has to face the problems of his love for a girl. He decides to sever his relationship with her in order to protect her from his infection.

At the clinic he discovers the man from whom he caught the disease, and that the man's wife is expecting a baby. When the child is stillborn, the wife decides to divorce her husband. The last part of the film develops the relationship of the young doctor with the various women with whom he comes into contact during his abstinence since the war.
