BOYS AND GIRLS

Des garçons et des filles

Director Etienne Perier / 1967 / Belgium/France

Ten non-conforming youngsters rent a rambling old mansion for an experiment in communal living to do as they please while deferring acceptance of the responsibilities of adulthood. Their initial enthusiasm begins to wane as disorder waxes. So they must organize themselves with tiresome tasks and taboos into their own form of society.

The experiment fails to the extent that it fosters their growth towards maturity. At last, with eviction from the house, they have learnt that each must go his own way inevitably to grow up.

At a lime when the cinema is dominated by themes about youth and violence, this film is a refreshing change with its humour and gaiety, the charm and vitality of its talented young players.
