DEEP HEARTS

Director Robert Gardner, Robert Fulton / 1980 / USA

"Deep Hearts" is a film about the Bororo Fulani of the Niger Republic in Africa. The Bororo are a nomadic people who move with their beloved cattle across the infelicitous Sahel. The film was made during the few weeks that they gather in large numbers during the rains to celebrate their just pride in themselves as independent and beautiful people. At the gathering they hold a ritual series of dances known as "berewol" in which the younger men compete in a contest of beauty. "Deep Hearts" is their description of how they must live. For Ihem it is necessary to hide the feelings of envy which they all experience, and they do this by cultivating a deep and secret heart.
