SQUIRE'S LOVES
Der Landvogt Von Greifensee
This film offers continuing evidence that Swiss film-making is still maintaining the high standards first achieved by Alain Tanner and Claude Goretta in the late sixties. Wilfried Bolliger is a new director and has chosen to set his second film in that area where many fear to tread, the romantic period comedy.
The film is based on a 19th century novel and it concerns a handsome squire named Salomon Landolt, who looks back over his picaresque love life and decides to invite the five women who most dominated his affections to spend a weekend with him. Each woman has not seen Salomon for years and thinks that she alone has been invited.
"This very stylish adaptation of Gottfried Keller's 19th century novel is a thoroughly delightful comedy of manners, somewhat reminiscent of Eric Rohmer's La Marquise Von O with its witty aphorisms, pastel colour photography and a strong ironic twist to the plot."
Albert Johnson, Variety.
