Based on a short story by Flannery O'Connor, whose novel Wise Blood was recently filmed by John Huston, the film is set on a small dairy farm in South Georgia during the early 1 950s The farm is run with proud efficiency by Mrs Cope, a widow with a young daughter Mrs Cope is paid a surprise visit by three boys from Atlanta who leave the farm much changed from the way they found it.
