Taking A Part
A documentary about the experience of two girls who both came to London at an early age from working class backgrounds, one of whom has a child. Both are involved in prostitution; one decides to give up prostitution, one probably never will. Prostitution is not the subject of Taking A Part. You learn very little about it as a social or moral issue, or about the problems of prostitutes, police harassment. exploitation and abuse. The film deals with prostitution only as it is raised in the way the women think of themselves and earning their living. The film draws out the unreality of their constructions of themselves, the fantasy, the explanations they fall back on in the face of contradictions of class pressures on them as women in a male bourgeois world.
