SOLDIER GIRLS

Director Nick Broomfield, Joan Churchill / 1980 / UK

A documentary depicting the lives of women army recruits in a camp at Fort Gordon, Georgia. The filmmakers picked out four privates — two black and two white — and followed them closely through the mental and physical rigors of the camp. They came into the army in the hope of a better life, drawn by advertisements which fail to mention the physical training and the humiliations that go to make a soldier
