CHICKEN RANCH

Director Nick Broomfield, Sandi Sissel / 1982 / USA

Chicken Ranch is a documentary film about the women oft he best known brothel in America. Situated in the barren desert 60 miles outside of Las Vegas, the Chicken Ranch is one of 38 legal houses of prostitution in Nevada, the only state in which prostitution is condoned.

The film observes the work-a-day lives of women who ply the world's oldest profession. Their average age is 21 and they make between $500 and $2000 a week on a 50/50 split with the house. They are looked after by Fran, the stern but motherly Madame, and are lectured regularly by Waiter, the avuncular owner who is given to biblical homilies.
