MOUNTAIN MUSIC OF PERU

Director John Cohen / 1985 / USA

The musical thread which runs through the Andes extends for thousands of years, its roots lie with the ancient Inca culture, and have been strong enough to resist the Spanish conquest and the forces of modern Western civilisation. This musical travelog moves from small towns and remote mountain villages to Lima, showing how Peru's popular Huaynos music connects even the most isolated groups of people. The film features traditional Quechuan songs, flute music, brass bands, costumed dance groups, pan pipes, the annual Inca festival of the Sun. street musicians, a scissor dance and political protest songs at a miners' demonstration.
