MIXED BLOOD

Director Paul Morrissey / 1986 / USA

Rita la Punta is a Brazilian drug dealer who has made her home in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She recruits Hispanics under the age of 15 as they are too young to be prosecuted for murder. She muscles in on the drug monopolies, the suppliers and the dealers. Overprotective towards Thiago. her son who seems not to be the "full quid". Rita's gang soon finds itself involved in a full scale war.

Paul Morrissey, best known as Andy Warhol's film director throughout the 1970s, has made a violent, black comedy certain to churn the stomachs of many in the audience. MIXED BLOOD is located among the ruins of Alphabet City — Avenues A to D on Manhattan's Lower East Side — notorious for its drui trade and street crime. Morrissey deliberately sets out to shock by exaggerating and laughing at most audiences' preconceptions of New York's seediest area. At times like a spaghetti western, at others like an austere Bresson film. MIXED BLOOD is essentially a high energy satire.
