THE MORO AFFAIR
Il Caso Moro
II caso Moro examines the kidnapping, capture and killing of Italian Christian Democrat leader Aldo Moro in fine detail with the benefit of historical hindsight. Based on Robert Katz's documentary book Days Of Wrath, the film finds no new or startling evidence that could solve the mysteries, unanswered questions and far-fetched speculation surrounding the case; nor does it make conclusive accusations of guilt or blame. It presents the various hypotheses about the case through the personal drama of its central figure, Aldo Moro, politician Christian party leader and family man.
Playing the part of Moro is Gian Maria Volonte, whose performance as the tragic politician has earned wide acclaim in Italy, and a best actor award at the Berlin Film Festival. Among the scenes which have impressed audiences is the depiction of Moro reaching towards communication with the leader of his terrorist captors (Mattia Sbragia), each man winning and giving a grudging respect born out of their joint isolation. Margarita Lozano, who plays Moro's wife, has also earned praise for her sensitive performance, which confirmed // caso Moro as primarily a study of people, rather than of parties and politics.
