PHEASANT TOMORROW

Holnap Lesz Facan

Director Sandor Sara / 1974 / Hungary

Sandor Sara's second feature as a director is set on a little island on the Danube, once secluded, now overrun by cameras and holiday makers. A young couple, Istvan and Maria, find that their plans for an idyllic holiday are shattered; first by a boisterous crowd of young people, then by milling crowds of campers who overrun the island. Some visitors start to impose stringent rules and regulations: swimming is banned outside a certain area, and a young man is beaten up for going outside the boundary; lanes are drawn up between the tents; meals are served according to a timetable; every attempt at non-conformism is stifled. Sara uses the setting to make some witty observations about human nature and collectivism.
