THAT SWEET WORD LIBERTY

Eto Sladkoe Slovo Svoboda

Director V. Jalakyavichus / 1973 / USSR

This film won the Grand Prize at the Moscow Festival last year. It is a modern political thriller based on actual recent events in Venezuela. Three communist senators are arrested and held in prison without trial. One of their supporters sets up a shop opposite the prison and ingratiates himself with the police and military who frequent it. Over several months, a tunnel is dug from beneath the shop arid under the prison walls to the cell where the senators are held. The film builds increasing tension through several sub-plots and a tight, direct narrative style.

Best Picture, Moscow.
