MATCHLESS

Director John Papadopoulos / 1974 / Australia

Three misfits live together in what is for them the closest approximation to harmony and contentment. Annie, constantly driven by inner torments, bullies and protects her friend Cynthia, a dreamy epileptic. With Victor, an ageing alcoholic, they make their home in a derelict house and shun the society which can no more cope with them than they with if. When authorities discover this irregularity, they feel obliged to intervene, and the delicate balance of interdependence in the three instinctive lives is destroyed by the intrusion of orthodox logic. The disaster which follows is due not so much to fate or fault, but to the natural interaction of human personalities and disabilities.
