IN DANGER AND DISTRESS COMPROMISE MEANS DEATH

In Gefahr und grösster Not bringt der Mittelweg den Tod

Director Alexander Kluge, Edgar Reitz / 1975 / Germany

Fiction and documentary are blended in an attempt to produce an insight into the subjective nature of truth.

Inge Meier, who steals from her lovers, is not a prostitute, but merely combines the satisfaction of her sexual and her material desires. Secret agent Rita MiJller-Eisert, instead of carrying out her assignment, gives free reign to her natural curiosity.

These two fictional stories are blended with reports covering some 10 days of activity in Frankfurt which include the annual Mardi Gras, police action against the occupation of homes slated for demolition, and the clash at the convention of the German Labour Party. The fragmented nature of our society presents each individual with differing aspects of an illusive total reality. Yet a view of this total reality is necessary to raise human consciousness. This dilemma forms the theme of this film.
