Kata is a widowed factory worker whose lonely existence is relieved by a long-standing affair with a fellow worker. He is married and will not consider leaving his family. Kata decides she wants to have a child by him, but circumstances force her to change her mind. Then she is approached by a young girl, Anna, who needs a room in which to meet her lover. The relationship between the two women grows until they both determine to begin new lives, one through marriage, the other through adoption. Anna has already been sent to a home for wayward girls by her unsympathetic parents, and Kata approaches the parents in order to get permission for the young couple to marry. But Anna's decision to marry, and Kata's to adopt a child, only bring new responsibilities and tensions.
'A pic with broad psychological impact, shot mostly in tight close-ups and sharp angles to scratch below the surface of role-playing and traditional cliches in male-female relations.'

'The simple, affecting tales owes much to its acting, especially by Kati Berek as the lonely would-be mother an also to the patient and often poignant direction by another woman in her forties.'
