MY MAMA DONE TOLD ME

Director Elizabeth Taylor-Mead / 1987 / UK

My Mama Done Told Me is about torch songs as they arc experienced in real life It weaves together classical recordings (by Edith Piaf, Nina Simone and Peggy Lee, among others) with dramatic dance sequences performed by Lynne Seymour, based on Elizabeth Smarts evocative depiction of an obsessive love affair, 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. The film interviews ten women of different ages and backgrounds who talk poignantly and directly, about their own obsessive romances. The stones seem as remarkable to the women themselves as they will to their intended audience.
